Technical session of SPWLA India Chapter

SPWLA-India Chapter, Mumbai presents technical talk on

(ROS) Residual oil saturation and its estimation techniques.

In line with the objective of the parent body of Society of Petrophysicists and Well Log Analysts (SPWLA), USA, the Indian chapter of SPWLA is involved with the onerous task of promoting new technology and techniques for advancement of formation evaluation in India. To achieve this objective, SPWLA India chapter organizes technical meets and lectures by eminent personalities from industry and academia to share the expertise and deliberate on recent developments.

On 28th September, 2007, technical session was organized at Hotel Leela, Mumbai. Mr. Chatar Singh, President - SPWLA, India chapter in his opening address gave a brief account of activities of the chapter and future programmes.  On this occasion, the third issue of News Letter of SPWLA – India chapter was released.

Mr Chatar Singh, President SPWLA – India Chapter, welcoming Mr Raghu Ramamoorthy Regional Director Africa, Middle East and India and Vice President Mr Dinesh Chandra sharing the facilitation ceremony.

Mr A K Sinha Vice President ( Technical ) SPWLA – India Chapter, honoring Mr Vivek Garg  SG ( wells ) ONGC, Mumbai second speaker of the day with a certificate.

Mr. Raghu Ramamoorthy, Regional Director, SPWLA, Dubai, gave an impressive presentation on “Lessons in reservoir saturation monitoring from Middle East carbonate Reservoirs”. He discussed the importance of saturation evaluation in mixed wet carbonate reservoirs which should be independent of formation resistivity saturation exponent ‘n’ & cementation exponent ‘m’. Cementation factor ‘m’ is highly affected by vugs and saturation exponent ‘n’ by mixed salinities (arising out of water flooding due to injection)’. He emphasized on the use of combination of NMR and MDT for Residual Oil Saturation. He shared the methodology for evaluating apparent water salinity through Chlorine / Hydrogen ratio. Use of C/O, Sigma & NMR are useful inputs for lithology characterization and Resistivity Independent Saturation Evaluation.

The second talk of the day was by Mr. Vivek Garg from Neelam & Heera Asset of ONGC on “Productivity Enhancement and Water Control in a mature field through Rig less operations”

Mr. Vivek Garg in his presentation highlighted an innovative approach through rig less operations for incremental oil production with reduction in water cut. Using Pulsed Neutron Spectroscopic data, he explained the methodology of identifying the bypassed pay and a novel technique of computation of salinity indicator for identifying sub units in the pay zone where injection water has made its path. This helped in deciding additional perforation intervals which were free of injection water accumulation. The signatures on open hole logs corresponding to sub units holding injection water were marked out and correlated.

The additional perforations planned in non affected parts yielded incremental oil of 935 barrels per day with reduction in water cut from 80 to 76%, from seven intervened wells.

Chatar Singh President SPWLA – India Chapter, A K Sinha Vice President( Technology), Dinesh Chandra Vice President,  Mr. Raghu Ramamoorthy Regional Director SPWLA(1st Speaker), Dubai, V K Kansal, Vice President ( Membership), Vivek Garg ( 2 nd speaker), S K Anand Secretary and B N Achar Treasurer SPWLA India chapter Mumbai sharing the moments after two technical talks on 28 – 9 – 2007.

The talk was attended by personnel from ONGC, Reliance, Schlumberger, Baker Atlas, Halliburton, Professor and students from Earth Science Department of Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai. Both the presentations evoked keen interest among the audience who actively interacted with the speakers during Q & A session and social hour.

Mr. S K Anand, Secretary, SPWLA India Chapter, Mumbai proposed the vote of thanks and thanked M / s Schlumberger, sponsorer of the event. The evening concluded with a sumptuous dinner.
